Statistics Canada, Census2016 MIS (Dec 2013-March 2016)

Towards the end of 2013, Peter joined the development team for an MIS Reporting system related to the 2016 Census as a senior PL/SQL technical resource.

The main data source for this system is the ICOS Collection Management Portal, a new system being rolled out for the 2016 Canada Census. ICOS will eventually support not only the census but also several other surveys conducted on a regular basis by Statistics Canada. It features a Java-based front end and an Oracle database.

MIS also has interfaces with two systems based on Microsoft SQL Server – an incoming interface with the Census pay system, and an outgoing interface with a system based on Microsoft Reporting Services which supports both static and cube reports.

Peter’s contributions to the MIS team have been in several main areas.

  • Analysis, design and development of the ETL process for data incoming from the ICOS CMP
  • Technical mentorship for a team of six developers
  • Technical infrastructure for all reports
  • Design and development of specific reports
  • Troubleshooting
  • Documentation
